Project Brief: Reinforce muddy fishing swims and access routes while maintaining the natural appearance of the fishery.

Total Project Area: 450m²

Product Used: X-Grid® Ground Reinforcement Grid with Bark Fill

Herringthorpe Junior School in Rotherham has benefited from a new 150m² Soft Gravel surface, supplied by GCL and installed by Greener Places.

The project formed part of a wider improvement to the school grounds, creating a new route through the outdoor space towards a dedicated seating and learning area.

The Project

Greener Places were commissioned to transform an area at Herringthorpe Junior School in Rotherham, creating a new pathway leading down towards a dedicated outdoor seating and learning area. The project covered approximately 150m² and required a new surface that could provide a practical finish for a busy school environment.

GCL supplied the materials required for the project, including the stone, rubber and PERMABOUND SG Binder used to create the Soft Gravel surface. The Gold/Black aggregate combination was chosen to complement the surrounding outdoor space and the new seating area being developed alongside the pathway.

The Installation

With the area prepared and ready for surfacing, the Soft Gravel was mixed on site by the installation team. Each batch was made by combining two bags of rubber and two bags of stone with PERMABOUND SG Binder inside a mixer.

The materials were mixed thoroughly to ensure the binder was evenly distributed throughout the aggregate. Once the mixture had been prepared, it was transferred to the pathway and spread across the prepared area by hand.

The team then used hand trowels to carefully work the material into position, creating an even and consistent surface. This process was repeated across the installation area until the full 150m² pathway and surface had been completed, with the team taking care to maintain a consistent finish throughout.

The Outcome

The completed installation has given Herringthorpe Junior School a newly surfaced pathway connecting the school with its improved outdoor area. The Gold/Black Soft Gravel provides a natural looking finish that sits well within the surrounding grounds.

At the end of the pathway, a large tree now forms the centrepiece of a new seating area, with wooden benches and seating pods positioned around it. The finished space provides pupils with a dedicated area for socialising, relaxing and outdoor learning, while the newly installed pathway creates a clear connection between the school and the new facilities.
