Project Brief: Creating an aesthetically pleasing, durable, permeable and low-maintenance gravel driveway for a private residence
Total Project Area: 300m²
Product Used: X-Grid
The Challenge
Armstrong Groundworks Ltd were approached by their client to find a solution for their driveway as part of a larger project at their home. The client requested an attractive, permeable and durable surface which would also require little to no maintenance.
Following research into several surfacing options, the Armstrong team suggested X-Grid to their client, the benefits of an X-Grid gravel driveway, not only met their expectations but exceeded them. After receiving confirmation from the client of a gravel driveway, the Armstrong team ordered 300m² of X-Grid which was then delivered directly to the client’s home, ready to be installed.
Why X-Grid Was Chosen
X-Grid is the strongest, independently tested, ground reinforcement grid on the market, capable of withstanding up to 420 tonnes per sqm when unfilled. Not only does X-Grid provide a strong and durable surface, but also permeable which allows rainwater to drain naturally, preventing water from puddling and reducing the risk of localised flooding.
Our incredibly effective gravel grid is also simple to install thanks to its lightweight construction and unique connection system, allowing one person to lay 100m² of X-Grid per hour!
The Gravel Driveway Installation
The Armstrong team executed the installation to perfection, following our recommended installation method to produce a solid sub-base and ensure the longevity and stability of their client’s new gravel parking area.
The area was excavated before starting the build-up with MOT Type 3 hardcore, creating a solid base to provide foundational strength. Onto this, a sheet of membrane was laid to prevent weed growth while allowing water permeability, supporting the drainage capabilities of X-Grid. A layer of sharp sand then followed, providing a smooth and level surface for the grids to be laid on.
With the foundation prepared, X-Grid could now be installed. Starting in one corner of the project, 1m² sections of X-Grid were laid at once which were easily interlocked thanks to the lightweight construction and innovative slot and peg connection system. This process was then repeated until the entire area had been covered!
Finally, the grid was filled with the customer’s choice of Golden Flint gravel, enhancing the area’s aesthetics while ensuring a fully permeable, natural finish.
The Final Results
The result is an attractive, functional and low-maintenance parking area that seamlessly integrates into their client’s property. The X-Grid, filled with Golden Flint to complete the pathway and driveway, creates a cohesive look from the start of the parking area right to the front door.
Armstrong Groundworks Ltd reported a smooth installation process, praising X-Grid’s ease of use and reliable performance. Their clients were thrilled with the result, noting the practicality and visual appeal of their new parking space and pathway.
With the installation of X-Grid a success, Armstrong Groundwork’s client now enjoys an aesthetically pleasing, functional and low-maintenance driveway which is also fully permeable, reducing the possibility of localised flooding.
