PERMABOUND Surfacing at York Racecourse

Resin Bound Surfacing Installation at York Racecourse

When you think of resin bound surfacing, driveways and pathways are often the first applications that come to mind. However, its versatility means it can be used across a huge range of commercial and public environments.

One recent example saw GCL Products supply PERMABOUND materials to one of Yorkshire’s most recognisable sporting venues, York Racecourse, where the venue’s own team installed PERMABOUND Space Grey resin bound surfacing across an 80m² tunnel and hospitality balcony areas.

The Project

York Racecourse welcomes just over 300,000 visitors a year for reasons such as the racing season and historical events. As a busy public venue, the surfacing needed to provide a practical and hard-wearing solution whilst also fitting naturally into the existing surroundings.

PERMABOUND resin bound surfacing was selected as a suitable solution for the project, combining durability with an attractive finish that could be used across the different areas of the racecourse. Its versatility made it well suited to both the 80m² tunnel and hospitality balcony areas, allowing the racecourse to achieve a consistent finish despite the different applications.

The racecourse selected the PERMABOUND Space Grey blend to complement the surrounding materials and features. Its neutral grey tones helped create a clean, modern appearance while sitting comfortably within the established character of the venue.

The Installation

As with every resin bound project, preparation is an important first step. The installation areas needed to be suitably prepared to provide a stable foundation for the finished surface.

Once the areas had been suitably prepared, the racecourse team could begin installing the PERMABOUND surface. Following the correct mixing and installation process was incredibly important to achieving a consistent, uniform finish.

Specialist washed and dried stone was mixed with PERMABOUND UVR+ resin binder in a forced action mixer. The mixed material was then laid across the prepared surface, carefully levelled and hand trowelled to create an attractive, smooth finish.

The Outcome

The completed project is a great example of the versatility of resin bound surfacing beyond traditional driveway applications. From an 80m² visitor tunnel to hospitality balconies, the same PERMABOUND system was used to create a consistent finish across very different areas of the racecourse.

It also demonstrates what can be achieved by an in-house team using the right materials and following the correct resin bound installation process.

GCL Products was delighted to supply the PERMABOUND materials for such a recognisable venue and see the Space Grey blend used to transform these unique areas of York Racecourse.
