Project Brief: A DIY installation of A resin bound patio and pathway
Total Project Area: 28M²
Product Used: PERMABOUND’s buckwheat Blend
When planning a garden transformation, there are several important factors to weigh up. Budget, durability and long-term maintenance often sit at the top of the list, closely followed by achieving a finish that is both practical and aesthetic. Homeowners increasingly want a surface that delivers reliable drainage, prevents weed growth and remains smooth and safe underfoot, all while creating that sought-after aesthetic look. Balancing cost against quality can be a challenge, particularly when comparing traditional options such as paving slabs with more contemporary systems like resin bound.
This was the decision faced by two homeowners who took on the task of installing a 28m² resin bound patio in their back garden using PERMABOUND’s Buckwheat blend. After careful planning and comparing costs, they discovered that resin not only offered a more aesthetically pleasing finish, but also proved to be the more budget friendly option.
The Project
Clare and her partner took on the challenge of transforming a 28m² space in their back garden all on their own. She had been searching for the perfect material for her garden that ticked all of her boxes and she then came across resin bound gravel. Clare had stated that “during the landscape planning for my garden, I looked at all the options for a budget friendly, quality and long lasting design that was low maintenance and aesthetically pleasing.
Surprisingly, when I weighed up the cost of slabs and the cost of resin, the resin option came out cheaper and I much preferred the overall look to any other option.”

The Installation
For the installation, Clare found the process far more straightforward than she had expected. After purchasing the resin, they received guidance and advice from the team, who helped answer their questions and ensured they understood important details such as temperature requirements and the correct depth to lay the material.
To make the job easier, they hired a 100L forced action mixer, which came with everything needed to start mixing straight away. The work was split between them, with one operating the mixer while the other laid and levelled the resin bound mixture.
From the first mix to the final section being laid, their entire back garden was completed in just four hours. They followed the recommended installation instructions perfectly, mixing 4 bags of stone, PERMABOUND UVR+ Resin Binder and binding quartz before decanting, spreading and hand trowelling until the surface was complete!
“Purchasing the resin was a dream and the team really made sure their service and advice was top notch, helping with any questions we had or advice we needed such as temperature requirements and depth to lay. We hired the 100l forced action mixer which came with everything we needed to start laying straight away. I was on the mixer and Scott was laying and levelling. I found this to be a lot easier and a lot faster than I was expecting.”
The Outcome
The finished result completely exceeded Clare and her partners expectations. The resin bound surface created a smooth, aesthetic finish that not only looks great but is also practical for everyday use.
Clare was particularly impressed with how comfortable the surface feels underfoot, as well as the permeability of the system, which allows water to drain away effectively while helping to prevent weed growth.
“I am beyond chuffed with the finished result. The resin is so flawless, smooth on even bare feet, there is no chance of weeds. The drainage is amazing. I was trying to achieve an ‘instagrammable’ garden and this has exceeded all of my expectations. I have had so many compliments on it and I am over the moon!
