Project Brief: To create a safe, attractive & low-maintenance safety surface around a Garden play area

This case study comes courtesy of Allium Landscapes, who were handpicked by their clients to transform a back garden into a haven of fun and safety for the clients young children. To ensure they achieved their clients wants of a safe play space which allowed imaginative play with peace of mind, Allium began their search for the most suitable safety surfacing option which would be installed beneath a wooden climbing frame and slide.
After much research and deliberation with the client, Allium concluded that installing a wet pour rubber surface would be the ideal solution to enhance the safety and aesthetics of the garden play space. They opted for this superb rubber surfacing solution to ensure;
- A significant reduction in the risk of fall-related injuries,
- To reduce regular maintenance as it is resistant to weather elements such as rain, allowing year-round usage,
- Provide a stable non-slip surface ideal for running, jumping and general playing.
Wet Pour Rubber Installation Process
The installation process began with the excavation of the existing grass and soil surface, in its place a suitable sub-base was prepared to give the rubber surfacing a strong and reliable foundation. This is a critical step in almost any project, to help guarantee a stable and long-lasting foundation for the play space.
Next, SBR rubber was then mixed with our rubber resin binder in a forced action mixer before being laid onto the prepared sub-base. The SBR base thickness determines the critical fall height performance of the rubber safety surface so it is highly recommended that you plan carefully ahead to ensure your new surface provides a suitable CFH rating for the play equipment it is under.
Then, the Reseda Green wet pour rubber was mixed with our specialist rubber crumb binder in a forced action mixer. This attractive 15mm top layer of rubber was expertly hand-trowelled onto the prepared SBR base before being finished with a roller, creating a seamless and resilient surface under the climbing frame and slide. The vibrant green colour of the wet pour rubber added an inviting touch to the garden while maintaining a safe and cushioned surface for play.
Finally, with the safety surface complete and fully cured, the climbing frame and slide could be assembled and installed. The manufacturer’s instructions were followed meticulously to ensure that all components were securely fastened and that the frame was level, stable and secured to the floor using anchors in the rubber surface. These added layers of safety measures ensured that the play area was not only protected by the rubber safety surface, but also through a sturdy and well-anchored climbing frame, providing the clients with complete peace of mind while their children enjoyed their new outdoor play haven.
Project Outcome
The transformation of the client’s garden is nothing short of remarkable. Their children now have a safe, durable and visually appealing play surface beneath a new wooden climbing frame and slide. With the wet pour rubber surface in place, the family can rest easy, knowing that their children are protected during outdoor adventures.
