About Rainsmart Double Ellipse Soakaway Crates
The Ellipse Soakaway Crates are manufactured from 100% recycled plastic. The crates are buried beneath the earth, gravel and other permeable materials in order to create a void space underground, ideal for holding rainwater or surface water run-off.
The crates are designed for use below low-intensity domestic surfaces such as small driveways or landscaped areas, the crates can protect homes and commercial premises against the effects of heavy rainfall and flooding. The crates can be stacked and stood side-by-side with other crates to make a large soakaway area.
During installation, it is recommended connecting the crates together using cable ties. A rubber mallet can be used to assemble to connect the structure together by applying enough pressure to create a strong crate.
The role of soakaway crates
The crates can either be used as a rainwater harvesting tank or to hold water indefinitely or for attenuation purposes. In the latter, the water is held temporarily until it can permeate through the crate and membrane and into the ground below. Each double crate will hold up to 233 litres of water, meaning that the underground tanks can be created quickly without the need for specialist lifting equipment and tools.
Water storage systems are installed underground and use pipes to collect as much water as possible and a non-permeable membrane is wrapped around the crates to prevent any water from escaping. The collected water can then be used for a number of applications, including water features, as reserves in case of drought or for watering flowers.
Infiltration systems are installed underground and use pipes to collect surface water and a permeable membrane is wrapped around each crate. The collected water is then slowly released into the ground below at an acceptable rate to ensure it does not overwhelm and cause surface water build up or localised flooding. The soakaway crates also prevent ingress of soil and sand particles which otherwise could lead to waterlogged ground.
The crates have size, load and capacity
Each crate has an overall area of approximately 0.25 square metres – four crates can therefore be used per cubic metre.
Rainsmart soakaway crates has an impressive void ratio of 95%. Each crate has a capacity of 233.64 litres.
The vertical load capacity of 24.2 tonnes per square metre ensures that Ellipse crates are safe to be used beneath gardens and pedestrian areas.
